HEGINS — Thousands of people packed the grounds of Hegins Park on Saturday for the latest Hegins Valley Arts & Crafts Faire.
The 36th edition of the Faire, held annually on the third weekend of September, marked one of the largest yet. It featured more than 200 craft and artisan vendors spanning all kinds of wares, from tools and trinkets to home decor, plants and pet supplies.
Under clear, sunny skies, the park drew crowds of curious shoppers. The event drew many shoppers who visit the Faire annually, in addition to first-timers.
Donna Doll of Annville said she has been attending since around the Faire’s fifth year, when it was about one-tenth of its current size. She usually likes to shop for pottery, candles, honey and maple syrups.
“It’s always been very well-organized,” Doll said.
The event, also well-regarded for its food options, didn’t disappoint on that front Saturday. About 20 local organizations, food trucks and other vendors offered a variety of fare — everything from barbecue and kebabs to pizza and pretzels.

Megan Hubler, Valley View, wanted to check out the Faire for its food and new crafters. She said the event always has an “amazing” turnout, which is great for the community and local small businesses.
“It always brings a lot of people in to see our little valley,” she said.
Judy Hill of Lattimer, Luzerne County, said she attends the Faire every year. Her shopping list Saturday included a bottle of elderberry juice, curtains and a hot pad.
Tony Campbell, who operates Campbell’s Broom Shoppe in Loysville, Perry County, sold a variety of handmade brooms at the Faire. Using broom corn, he put together brooms using a stitching press.
Campbell, who has participated in the Faire since the 1990s, said he usually sells about 300 brooms each year.
Scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, the event filled up most of the space at Hegins Park, located off the borough’s main street (Route 25).
Some shoppers wheeled small carts around with the items they purchased. Maureen Wolf, Pottsville, took home a hefty haul that included a penguin holiday decoration, a wine stand and towels.
A recurrent visitor, Wolf also likes to check out the yard sales on Main Street on her way out of the area.
“I love it,” Wolf said. “Every year, I mark it on my calendar.”
First held in September 1990, the inaugural Hegins Valley Faire featured 90 craft vendors and benefited three charities.
Proceeds from the event now benefit 13 local organizations; last year, $13,000 was donated to the organizations, according to Tricia Fedor, president of the Faire committee.
