It can be so frustrating finding inexpensive small accents for the home. No one wants to spend upwards of $50 for a tiny outdoor plant stand or porch side table. Even making your own out of real wood can get pricey once you factor in the tools, supplies, and time.
A clever and frugal crafter, however, has the perfect solution. Instead of forking over a ton of money for a simple piece, she took to the Dollar Tree craft aisles and was inspired to make her own adorable mini table.
The DIYer grabbed several foam craft rings and brilliantly stacked and glued them. Using spray paint, she covered them with a textured finish that gave the illusion of stone. For stability (and extra function), she lined the inside with a mesh trash can, then purchased a $5 wood round for the topper.
It functioned immediately as a perfect plant stand but was totally customizable for other fun ideas. The best part? The entire project came together for under $15, which is a fraction of what you’d spend on a similar “designer” piece at a big-box store.

More Ways to Use the DIY Side Table
With a few tweaks, this clever craft could be reimagined for several purposes. You can vary the size of the wreath rings to create larger or smaller pedestals and use them around the house as plant stands, display bases, or side tables.
Another smart use could be as a small outdoor trash can that doubles as a drink rest for guests. You could even add a removable lid for functionality. For the holidays, take the opportunity to paint the “stone” base in seasonally appropriate colors—like terracotta for fall or metallic silver for winter—to instantly tie it into your décor theme.
