In this course we will create monoprints with a small hand press, our bodies, found objects, and various surfaces. We will investigate how the speed and accessibility of a nontraditional printmaking practice can lead to a deep and complex means of making. What can variation and touch in the printing process teach us? What can an impression of the body communicate? We will look at artists like David Hammons, Ana Mendieta and Mona Hatoum, and study various techniques such as body printing, found-object printing and frottage. The course will be anchored in the studio and also feature readings that will inform visual prompts, discussion and projects.
NOTE: This course is held on campus at SVA.
