WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Catherine Prose, printmaking and drawing professor at MSU, is this year’s recipient of the Jane Spears Carnes Faculty Fellowship in Creative Endeavors, which is intended to support faculty in their individual endeavors for one semester.
Professor Prose is a Professor of Art in the Juanita and Ralph Harvey School of Visual Art and Lamar D. Fain College of Fine Arts. She has been recognized for her excellent work by established arts organizations such as the Georgetown Art Center, Mid-American Print Council, the School of Art at Texas Tech, and the Southern Graphics Council.
The creative research which Prose will be conducting, Impressions of Pressed Wildflowers, draws together around 200 flowers pressed by her grandmother Vera Prose (b. 1904-1998) and dating back 70 years. This process involves archiving, identifying, scanning, and digitizing the flora, as well as utilizing traditional Western-style printing press and screen-monotype techniques to create floral prints. The screen-monotype will act as a background for her laser engravings upon installation.
Jane Spears Carnes, the fellowship’s namesake, has been an art teacher and gallery owner herself and is a longtime supporter of the Wichita Falls art scene. Carnes has served on boards for the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra and the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at MSU, as well as the MSU Texas Board of Regents.
“I realized how critical it was to have time and solitude to work,” Carnes said. “It’s crucial to have time to block out the world so you can focus.”
