FLINT, Mich. — Local and regional artist will leave their mark on Flint — with a steamroller and a little ink.
The Flint Block Party features large-scale relief prints made from pre-carved wood blocks, pressed onto fabric using the weight of a steamroller. It is part of the University Musical Society (UMS) Flint Artist in Residence program and the brainchild of Michigan-born artist Janice McCoy, this year’s resident.
McCoy moved to Flint to attend the University of Michigan-Flint and study Biology, but after taking her first art class and connecting with Flint’s art community, she was able to find value in not only creating, but befriending other artists.
“Printing with a steamroller is not an original concept, printing parties have been held across the country,” said McCoy. “To my knowledge, Flint has never hosted one. When I received my residency through the University of Michigan, I wanted to change that.”
Hosted by the UMS, the free public event will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Flint Downtown Development Authority Flat Lot.
Alongside the main attraction, the event will include live demonstrations, feature 23 local and regional artists, family-friendly art activities, and resources from local arts organizations. The event aims to make printmaking accessible and engaging, creating an interactive experience for all ages.
“Printmaking in particular is not a well-known art medium to many people, but has wonderful potential for sharing, buying, and selling art because of its ability to make multiples,” said McCoy. “Maybe the people who attend this event will not make steamroller sized prints, but I hope that they will leave knowing a little more about something that they didn’t have exposure to previously.”
Collaborators include Flint Institute of Arts Museum + Art School (FIA), University of Michigan-Flint Department of Fine and Performing Arts, Riverbank Arts and Metro Asphalt Sealcoating LLC.
