LIMPOPO – Visual artist Mudinda Maumela (31) from Miluwani village near Sibasa is proof that raw talent, dedication and mentorship can transform a dream into a livelihood.
Specialising in painting, printmaking, watercolour, woodwork and ceramics, Maumela has created employment for himself through his art and is now inspiring others to do the same.
Born in Hamashamba Doli outside Louis Trichardt, Maumela was exposed to the world of visual art through the Mashamba Pottery Project, where he began teaching himself by observing others.

His journey took a life-changing turn when he moved to Miluwani and met veteran sculptor Avhashoni Mainganye, who recognised his talent and took him under his wing.
“It was like a dream come true,” said Maumela. “Avhashoni saw something in me and helped refine my skills in painting, pottery, and ceramics.”
His work began to draw attention at the Thohoyandou Art Centre, where he is now based. His pieces were also exhibited at Melrose Art Gallery in Johannesburg, following a visit from the gallery’s team to Thohoyandou.
More recently, Maumela’s paintings were on display at the Vhembe Craft Market held at Thohoyandou Botanical Gardens in June.
“My message to the youth is this: even if financial challenges prevent you from furthering your education, you can still rise above unemployment by using your talents. But it takes hard work, patience, and creativity,” Maumela said.
Mainganye praised him as a dedicated and hardworking artist.
“Mudinda excels in mediums such as watercolour, oil painting, printmaking, wood and plastic sculpture. He has been part of local exhibitions at Thavhani Mall and Riverview, showcasing alongside greats like Hendrick Nekhofhe and Meshack Raphalalani,” said Mainganye.
Maumela was also selected for the prestigious Sasol New Signatures Awards in 2022, held at the Pretoria Art Museum.
Beyond art, Maumela has been committed to physical fitness since 2013, frequently visiting the gym. He also trains in boxing under respected coach Smoking Joe Nemakonde.
“Given the right platform and support, Mudinda can achieve the unthinkable,” said Mainganye. “He is destined for greatness.”
