Continuing on last year’s success, the Vancouver Island Sculpting Studio in Nanaimo will hold its second annual student show this weekend.

“It’s really fun for the students to have the chance to show their work,” said sculptor and studio owner Joel Prevost. “And some of them, which are more serious, even have started to put their work for sale when we do a show.”

The art show, which features the work of approximately 18 students, will include drawings, watercolour urban sketches, functional-ware ceramics, and clay sculptures including that of hand, mouth and eye studies. Class and workshop instructors will also show some of their own work.

“When I started the idea, often I got people thinking, ‘I want to visit the studio but I’m shy to go in.’ So this is an opportunity for people at large to come and see the studio, which is not intimidating,” Prevost said. “I came back to the West Coast about seven years ago, and now I feel that more and more people discover that it can be fun and it’s not hard to sculpt … The first few years I started, it was really hard for people to understand, and now we have even people who are professional ceramists who come and study here.”

The opening wine reception will be held Friday, Sept. 12, from 6-9 p.m. at 294 Harewood Rd. and the show will continue Sept. 13-14, between 1-5 p.m. Gallery-viewers are encouraged to vote for their favourite pieces.
