KENNETH Gallardo, an artist and educator with over a decade of experience, has developed a unique and inspiring approach to visual art: coffee painting. Currently teaching at the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu High School, Gallardo draws much of his creative energy from the very students he mentors. Their enthusiasm fuels his artistic process, which includes not only coffee painting but also acrylic work and sketching.
He shares his passion beyond the classroom by conducting art workshops for children, introducing them to both traditional and unconventional art forms. Gallardo’s journey began at a young age, doodling clouds on the walls of his home. By elementary school, he had already set his heart on becoming an artist. That passion led him to pursue a degree in Fine Arts, majoring in Industrial Design, at UP Cebu.
But life took a difficult turn. As the youngest of three siblings, Kenneth faced a major setback when his father passed away in 2015. Financial difficulties forced him to pause his studies during his third year of college. With his mother having passed away in 2008 and his siblings focused on their own families, Kenneth stood on his own. He worked for three years as an art teacher to support himself, and in 2018, he returned to school and graduated through sheer determination and perseverance.
Today, he not only continues to teach but also accepts commissioned work, mostly portraits, through referrals and direct inquiries. His commissioned pieces typically range from P2,000 to P5,000, depending on the size. His art stands out for its deep connection to Filipino values and culture, often portrayed through symbolic representations of animals.
Kenneth is also supported by his wife, Anni Perez-Gallardo, who is also a teacher. Together, they face the challenges of everyday life, leaning on each other’s strength and dedication. Their shared commitment to education and family helps them navigate the ups and downs while continuing to inspire others through their work.
Kenneth’s art has been exhibited in various shows, purchased as gifts for notable personalities, and is even displayed in a local coffee shop — fitting for someone who paints with coffee. Through resilience, creativity and the unwavering support of his partner, Kenneth proves that art isn’t just something you create; it’s something you live and share.
