AN EXHIBITION, which marks the move of a city-based resource centre, showcases work from the rise of a popular art movement around Limerick.

Using boxing gloves to punch paint onto boards is entirely the idea of artist Frank McCarthy, who came up with the concept called Paint Punch, while observing young Traveller boys in Abbeyfeale in 2022.

Working with fellow artists Harry Bradshaw and Seán Horgan as well as with the Local Creative Youth Partnership and The GAFF, Frank piloted his first Paint Punch workshops with St. Mary’s School in Abbeyfeale.

Following a rollout of workshops, Paint Punch became increasingly popular and art creations by youths of Limerick Learning Hub, Kileely, Limerick Youth Service, Askeaton and Ballyhoura Development Company, Kilmallock.

“With initial funding from Creative Ireland’s Traveller Wellbeing through Creativity programme and from Creative Ireland via the Local Creative Youth Partnership, the project took hold in west Limerick,” said a spokesperson.

“The GAFF was most appreciative of supports received to expand the project and to bring the work to public attention through exhibition.

“October 8 was an auspicious day for everyone associated with The GAFF. The exhibition opening, as the first event in the new company home, marked an important point in a journey for artists and art workers in Limerick to find a dedicated home for performing and collaborative arts.”

Having vacated a temporary home on Cecil St in 2020, the board of directors of The GAFF have been working with Limerick City and County Council’s to find a suitable building to facilitate creative activities.

“The company is most grateful to Limerick Council and to the JP McManus Benevolent Fund and to colleagues across theatre, arts and community settings who have helped bring about the completion of Phase 1 development on 30 Edward St.

“The board is now actively fundraising for Phase 2 and hopes to be in a position to go to tender in the coming months.”

Those who wish to view Paint Punch in the new build can visit The GAFF at their new home in 30 Lord Edward St, between 2pm and 6pm until this Saturday, October 12.
