Creative director and artist Mat Maitland has just unveiled newest project Collages for Magazines, launch on November 1. Maitland’s debut book, which can be pre-ordered now, reflects his illustrious contributions to publications and his famed partnerships from the past 15 years, serving as the first time that he has displayed his collages together in this format.
Collages for Magazines offers a unique window into Maitland’s world of pop-surrealism, celebrating his impact on modern visual culture in the digital age. Having been influential in the revival of collage imaging in the early 2000s, Maitland’s images have been commissioned by fashion brands such Hermés, Bulgari, and Louis Vuitton, to name a few, as some of his notable magazine clients include Vogue, Interview, Harper’s Bazaar, and of course, V Magazine.
“These collages I have created for magazines have allowed me to explore and develop my image making with an unbridled and often surprising outcome. Due to my process being largely intuitive and unplanned,” Maitland notes in a statement.
“Maitland’s digital renderings make the eyes skip and the mind race with their unusual juxtapositions, as he pits the futuristic against the nostalgic and the phantasmagorical against the familiar. Unusually, a quiet cerebral quality sits comfortably alongside palpable accents of pulp melodrama,” Sotheby’s commented.
The English visual artist has also received acclaim for his involvement in design campaigns within the music industry. Maitland has previously worked with musical artists like Prince, Lana Del Rey, Michael Jackson—whose posthumous 2014 album, Xscape, he did the cover art for—Beck and Elton John, to name a few.
