BEREA, Ohio — Watercolorist Nancy Notarianni loves to paint pictures of people.
So when she and her husband were browsing the West Side Market, she spotted Bruce Tayse, who was operating his butcher shop.
“He had a compelling look about him,” Notarianni said. “Just his stance. He had a pensive look.
“We asked if we could take his picture,” she said. Notarianni photographs her subjects, then works on the portraits in her studio.
The result won Notarianni a gold medal in the Ohio Watercolor Society’s 48th annual juried exhibition earlier this year.
She called her painting “West Side Market Man.”
She has been accepted into the society’s annual exhibitions, and this was a first-time win.
Notarianni said she later learned that Tayse had closed his shop and now works for Foster Meats.
“I wonder if that pensive look was the result of his worry about his business,” she said.
The exhibition runs through Nov. 16 at the Springfield Museum of Art in Springfield, Ohio. Then, 32 of the paintings will become a traveling exhibit.
In December and January, it will be at the Amos Memorial Library in Sidney, at the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts in Findlay in February and March, and at the Piqua Public Library in April.
A slideshow of the exhibit is available to view on ohiowatercolorsociety.org.
