Join an immersive, two-week session and transform your studio practice. Online or in-person.

“The Marathon was unlike any experience I’ve had and not something I will soon forget. It was important for my progress and validation as an artist. I leveled up […] and I’m ready to tackle subjects that I was reluctant to in the past. It was well worth my time…I would [attend] again in a heartbeat.”
—Kareem Johnson, Summer Drawing Marathon
The New York Studio School’s Marathon program engages students in a rigorous two-week intensive where they are exposed to a multitude of approaches in drawing and painting, with virtual and in-person options. Every day, from 9am to 6pm, students work continuously on their craft, often ending each day in critiques. Marathons are led by both New York Studio School faculty and distinguished visiting artists who teach for the entire two-week session.
The Marathon pushes students to unlock new and exciting ways of creating. Each individual must confront the problems of drawing and painting with vigor and intensity. Students are further intellectually challenged and stimulated by extensive group discussion and individual critiques. The New York Studio School welcomes students and artists of all experience levels to apply.

Virtual Marathons are an incredible opportunity for artists from around the world to experience the high-caliber intensives from their respective homes and studios. Taught live through Zoom and Padlet, these courses bring the rigorous exercises, profound insights, and deep connections of in-person Marathons online. Students interact directly with their instructors and fellow coursemates, creating an exciting artistic community connected all around the world.
“The Marathon opened my mind to new ways of seeing and conceiving of space and the different relationships that make up a composition. Rather than focusing on the figure alone, I began to see also the fixed objects that surround it […]. This and other discoveries pushed me to shake up hardened habits in my studio practice by focusing more on spatial relationships […] and constructing new compositions.”
—Gregg Rosen, Summer Drawing Marathon
