A two-part exhibition of works by established European artists, “Graphic Collection – Part I (until 1940)” and “Graphic Collection – Part II (after 1945)”, will be presented at the Rivoli Gallery in Sofia, the hosts said on Wednesday.
The organizers said that the project presents printmaking as an independent artistic language through works from Romanticism, Modernism and Surrealism. The curator of the exhibition is Sandra Blazheva, an artist and art historian with a PhD in Art Studies and Fine Arts.
The first exhibition, “Graphic Collection – Part I (until 1940)”, will open on May 20 at 6:30 pm, bringing together artists such as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Gustav Klimt and Marc Chagall, tracing the liberation of line from descriptiveness and its transformation into an autonomous visual language, the gallery adds.
The second part, “Graphic Collection – Part II (after 1945)”, develops this dialogue into the field of later figuration, expressive gesture and new urban visual cultures through artists such as Ugo Attardi, Xavier Grau Masip, Joel Hubaut and Chris Daze Ellis.
Over two consecutive periods, the audience will follow how the graphic sheet transforms from a space of formal experimentation in the first half of the 20th century to a field of free visual gesture after 1945, the organizers said.
“The two exhibitions are conceived as a unified curatorial line offering an opportunity to see key artistic transformations in printmaking in a concentrated format. This is a season that places printmaking at the centre of attention as an independent artistic and collecting territory,” the team added.
