Tryon Arts & Crafts School hosts Open House Mixer

TRYON—The Tryon Arts & Crafts School was alive with excitement on Friday evening as the community came together for its Open House Mixer and the soft opening of the TACS Instructor Showcase. The event welcomed an impressive crowd, as families, art enthusiasts, and newcomers gathered to celebrate local creativity and artistry.

TACS Director Will Barclift described the event as a “friendraiser,” perfect for showcasing the artistic spirit of the Tryon community. “It was wonderful to see so many people come out to connect and celebrate what we have to offer,” he said.

The evening featured live music from the Burnett Sisters Band, whose bluegrass and folk tunes contributed to the lively atmosphere. Attendees enjoyed a delicious array of food from the TACS Grill, featuring favorites like hot dogs and flatbread pizza, which proved a hit with guests. 

Craft enthusiasts had the opportunity to participate in hands-on projects and watch demonstrations by professional artisans, including blacksmithing, pottery, woodworking, and weaving. One highlight of the evening was the Empty Bowls Pro Potters Throwdown, where an all-star line-up of local potters, including Roe Sprouls, Sam Oliver, and Jim Cullen, competed to create handcrafted bowls in real-time. 

Participants also had access to the artisan retail shop and the Instructors’ Gallery Showcase, featuring the work of talented faculty members, including Jimmi Buell and Susan McDade. “It’s inspiring to see the quality of work that our instructors produce,” said Buell. 

Raffles generated excitement as guests vied for prizes such as North Carolina lottery tickets, craft class enrollments, and TACS memberships.

As the evening came to a close, the air was filled with a sense of community and creativity. “We’re thrilled with the turnout,” instructor Joe Cooper reflected. “It’s a beautiful start to the spring season, and we look forward to more events that bring us together.”
