Oaxacan Printmaking: Art, Resistance & Reclaiming Spaces
Presented by Dr. Laurie Dalton
There are over 20 printmaking collectives located Oaxaca, Mexico, and for many it is the hub of printmaking in the country. An important focus of the various studios is on themes of resistance, where the act of creating work is a form of reclamation in and of itself. Some of that can be traced back to political protests in the city in 2006, when artwork was used as a form of political intervention in the streets. In this talk, I will focus on four of the collectives, and show how their technical mastery, themes of social resistance, and large-scale interventions demonstrate how visual art is a powerful tool for the defiance of limits and the disruption of boundaries.
