At the beginning of the month, Springhouse announced its second annual Wayzgoose Printing Festival, hosted through its print shop, Sourced Press.
The Wayzgoose celebration is a printer’s tradition from the 16th century, celebrating the transition from printing by sunlight to candlelight.
This year, Springhouse welcomes Salvador Jiménez-Flores, an interdisciplinary artist from Jalisco, Mexico, and founder of the Tortilla Social, an interactive printmaking and food workshop where participants eat freshly made tortillas and use a multi-functional tortilla press to make their own art work.
Tortilla Social creator Salvador Jimenez-Flores said, “Tortilla Social is a participatory project that transforms public spaces through the use of printmaking as a tool for self-expression, advocacy, art education, and food as a uniter of community. (Tortilla Social es un proyecto interactivo que transformará los espacios públicos a través del uso del grabado como herramienta para la auto expresión, la abogacía, la educación artística y la alimentación como unificador de la comunidad).”

The Wayzgoose Festival will include a printmaking workshop with Jiménez-Flores and the Sourced Press team, as well as a meal and community conversation facilitated by Jiménez-Flores and Springhouse high school students.
The fun begins at 4 p.m. on Nov. 1 at 144 Silver Maple Lane in Pilot.
“We are honored to have such a talented guest for our second annual Wayzgoose Festival,” said Sarah Piper Pollock, Springhouse Media Director and Director of Sourced Press. “Salvador is a gifted artist and social justice leader. This is an opportunity to connect beyond our local community and expand views through creativity and conversation.”
The festival is made possible in part with support from a grant the Springhouse received from Virginia Humanities.
Springhouse is an intergenerational, vitality-centered learning community in Southwest Virginia, transforming the purpose and practice of education.
In May 2023, Springhouse opened its print shop, Sourced Press, to share media through various printmaking techniques the power of the printed word and visual art through a tradition steeped in history, social justice and literary works.
So far, Sourced Press has written, designed and hand printed four books, multiple posters, cards and has hosted many printmaking workshops in the region.
Registration for the Wayzgoose Printing Festival meal closes on Oct. 23. Community members can register online at www.springhouse.org.
