Claim: An image shows action star Jackie Chan sculpting a statue of detained former president Rodrigo Duterte.
Rating: FALSE
Why we fact-checked this: Several Facebook users posted a photo showing Chan seemingly sculpting a statue of Duterte.
The caption of one of the Facebook posts says, “Kahit si the legend action star and comedy Jackie Chan…ay nagbahagi ng isang rebulto bilang pag respeto sa ating former president Rodrigo Roa Duterte…. #jackiechan”
(Even the legendary action and comedy star Jackie Chan shared a statue as a tribute to former president Rodrigo Roa Duterte.)

The facts: According to deepfake detection tool Sight Engine, the image is 97% likely to be AI-generated.
It was originally posted by a Facebook page named “Jay Dol” on May 17. The Facebook post clearly indicated that the content is AI-generated and was created for entertainment purposes only. However, several Facebook users reuploaded the same image with a different caption and removed the label indicating it was AI-generated, misleading other users.
Duterte monument joke: Speaking to the Filipino community in Hong Kong in March 2025, Duterte made a joke as he addressed reports of a possible arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) over his administration’s deadly drug war.
During his speech, he requested his supporters to build him a monument next to that of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.
“Mag-contribute kayo maski 5 dollars, 10 dollars para paglabas ko sa presohan, pagawa ‘nyo ako monumento katabi ni Rizal,” Duterte said.
(Chip in even just $5, $10 so that when I get out of prison, you can have a monument of me built next to Rizal.)
On March 11, Duterte was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport over a warrant issued by the ICC. He is currently detained at The Hague over charges of crimes against humanity, and is set to appear for the confirmation of charges hearing in September.
Davao City mayor: In the May 2025 local elections, Duterte won the mayoral seat of Davao City with 662,630 votes, beating his former Cabinet secretary Karlo Nograles, who garnered 80,852 votes.
According to the Philippines’ Omnibus Election Code, Duterte must take the oath of office by November 13, 2025, otherwise his mayoral post will be deemed vacant. As the former president remains detained at the ICC, his youngest son and the incoming vice mayor, Sebastian Duterte, is anticipated to take over as officer-in-charge mayor.
Fact-checked: Since Duterte’s arrest, various posts alleging support for the former president have emerged online. These include AI-generated images of supposed Duterte monuments and statues:
