(ABC 6 News) – The Rochester Arts and Crafts Festival is in town at the Empire Events Center this weekend.
People can check out the work of emerging artists from Minnesota at various booths on October 10 and 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
You can buy new arts and trinkets for your home, or even use it as a way to get a jump on your holiday shopping.
This is the first time this craft show has come to Rochester, but organizers say they’d like to bring it back next year, possibly as a Christmas show.
There’s everything from word carvings, pottery and kirigami, to paintings, photographs, jewelry and more.
One vendor, Karen Wedul who goes by the artist name Scattered Sunshine, finds silver plates at antique stores, fixes them up and gives them new life by adding mosaic designs.
“I had a woman today buy a tray that had three cats and they’re sitting on a wall and their backs were facing outward, and she’s like, those are my three cats, I have the exact same color cats, and so immediately she took it and bought it and that just brings me such joy,” said Wedul.
The plates are not safe to eat off of, but can be used as a coaster for drinks or just on display as a work of art.
Wedul says each piece typically takes somewhere between 5-10 hours to create.
“I lose track of time. That’s the beauty about art is that, you know, you just kinda get into a place where creating is, it just comes out of you,” said Wedul.
