Over 1,900 fencers from across the U.S. and Canada are taking part in the Ben Gutenberg Memorial Tournament. It’s only one of three events in the northeast that serves as a qualifier to the Summer Nationals.
There will be 36 events across all age groups, ranging from Youth-8 to Under 20. The tournament will feature all three fencing weapons: Foil, epee, and saber. It’s hosted by the Rochester Fencing Club and the Rochester Area Fencing Foundation, under the guidance of two-time Olympian Felicia Zimmermann. You can learn more and see the schedule here.
Indigenous-owned businesses at Rochester Public Market (Saturday)
Indigenous-owned businesses will be selling at the Rochester Public Market on Saturday. It’s part of the last Unity Market Series of the season.
Unity Market days are designed to expand the diversity of vendors and products at the market through culturally-focused businesses. The vendors will sell at the outdoor, covered “D” Shed, providing great visibility during the market’s busiest shopping day of the week.
The Unity Market series began in June and takes place on the third Saturday of each month. You can learn more here.
RMSC exhibit about life in space (opens Friday)
A new exhibit at the RMSC is offering visitors a unique glimpse into life in space. The traveling exhibit, “Astronaut,” is on tour from Australia. It invites visitors to step into the boots of a space explorer and experience the physical, mental, and technical challenges of life in space.
The exhibit opened on Friday and will be at the museum through May 3, 2026. It provides an opportunity for those curious about what it’s like to sleep, eat, shower, and even use the toilet in space.
“One of the things that’s been the strongest for scientific development across the nation has been space exploration. It just inspires curiosity. It makes people want to understand more about our world. And I think an exhibition like that does the same thing for all generations, it really inspires you to think what else is out there and how do we discover it?” said Calvin Uzelmeier, vice president for exhibits and programs at RMSC.
