LONDON – The Greek Library of London invites the public to an event dedicated to the life and work of the distinguished printmaker Hambis Tsangaris, titled ‘The Art of Printmaking’, which will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch (335–337 Old Street, London EC1V 9LL).

The event, organized in collaboration with the Hambis Municipal Museum of Printmaking, is being held under the auspices of the Mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Prountzos, and is supported by the Athens Printmaking Center – Pandolfini & Siaterli, honoring the artist’s rich creative journey and his significant contribution to Cypriot printmaking.

The curation and presentation of the event will be undertaken by Greek Cypriot journalist Vassoula Christodoulou, Head of Cypriot Cultural Events at the Greek Library of London.

The program includes an interview with the artist, a presentation of his work by art historian and museologist Vasia Magoula, as well as a screening of audiovisual material by Christos & Leda Agiomamitis.

A discussion with the audience (Q&A) and a drinks reception will follow.

The event is part of the Greek Library of London’s new initiative Portraits of Cyprus, which aims to highlight themes of Cyprus’s cultural heritage as well as prominent figures in literature and the arts.

A Few Words About the Artist

Hambis Tsangaris was born in 1947 in Kontea, in the Turkish-Occupied Famagusta district. He became involved in art at an early age and organized his first solo exhibition in Famagusta in 1968. In 1971, following an invitation from the renowned Greek printmaker A. Tassos, he moved to Athens, where he received his first printmaking lessons in Tassos’s workshop. In 1976, he went to Moscow, where he studied graphic arts at the Surikov State Art Institute from 1976 to 1982.

He has held solo exhibitions in Cyprus, Moscow, Titograd, Athens, Kozani, Ljubljana, London, Nancy, Edinburgh, Mexico City, and New York. He has also participated in group exhibitions in Cyprus, Greece, the United States, China, Australia, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, France, and elsewhere.

Among other distinctions, he participated in the 9th Alexandria Biennale (1972), the Commonwealth Exhibition in Australia (1982), the 15th and 16th Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts (1983 and 1985), and the Mediterranean Artists Exhibition in Marseille (1985), among others.

His book ‘Oi Triplaroi t͡zai o Drakos tis Milias’ – ‘The Triplaroi and the Dragon of the Apple Tree’, was selected by the International Youth Library of Munich as one of the top 200 books worldwide and was honored with the White Ravens distinction.

In 2008, he founded the Hambis Printmaking Museum in Plataniskia, featuring a collection of works from various countries spanning from the 16th century to the present. In 2019, the Hambis Municipal Museum of Printmaking was established in Nicosia.

In 2023, he was awarded the European Heritage Award/Europa Nostra Award.
