When did you set up the business?
Started the business in October 2020.
Why did you set up the Business?
I have always been a creative person. My grandma was a knitter, unfortunately I never had the patience for wool, but my mum was the one who taught me how to sew, I used to love sewing buttons onto fabric squares as a child.
The business itself was born out of lockdown. My high-functioning anxiety was at an all time high, I was high-risk for covid so couldn’t leave the house and needed a distraction/outlet.
So, my sewing machine came out of the cupboard, and I quickly realised I could only make so many scrunchies for myself! I wanted to do something that would make people happy. Now making accessories isn’t going to save the world but if makes people happy then it’s worth it!
How many people do you have working for you?
It’s just me and my dog Arnie (official model for Crafts by Kate).

What do you consider to be your USP?
Everything is handcrafted by myself. All of my fabrics are sourced from local small business fabric suppliers. An eco conscious business which is dedicated to being a zero-fabric waste business.
Why do you think it is important that people use local shops and businesses?
Now more than ever I think it is incredibly important to shop small and local.
During lockdown there was a big drive to support local businesses, but this mind-set seems to be disappearing again. If you don’t shop local, then soon we won’t have anywhere local to shop.
Big chains will survive but small brands won’t. Ely has a rich collection of small businesses and a fantastic market full of local traders who need supporting. Small and local businesses provide that extra quality and care. We also appreciate every sale no matter how big or small!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I am not the only small business trader in Ely there are a wide range of fantastic traders who are at Ely Market every week. Many cities and towns do not have the wide range of local businesses like us, these need to be appreciated and supported.
