On Monday, 23 February 2026, a painting of Blessed Nazju Falzon was inaugurated and blessed at the Law Courts building in Valletta by the Vice Postulator, Fr Anton Farrugia Pisani OFM.
The painting is the work of artist Manuel Farrugia, while the gold-gilded frame was crafted by the firm Prev Arti.
“It was thanks to the Chief Justice, Dr Mark Chetcuti, and his collaborators, who accepted the donation of this painting, that we are able to inaugurate today this cherished tribute to Blessed Nazju Falzon,” stated Fr Anton Farrugia Pisani OFM.
Nazju Falzon hailed from Valletta. He was born on 1 July 1813, during one of the most severe plague periods. His family was well known and highly influential. His father, Dr Francesco Giuseppe Falzon, was a lawyer who later became a judge. It was customary in the family to pursue studies in Law. Nazju Falzon studied at the Royal University of Malta and, at around 20 years of age, obtained a doctorate in Canon and Civil Law. Although he chose to live as a cleric, feeling unworthy of becoming a priest, he nevertheless used his legal training to offer free legal advice to the poor. His three brothers also graduated in Law; however, only Antonio practised as a lawyer and married, while Kalċidon and Franġisku became priests.
In addition to his exemplary way of life, Nazju Falzon is particularly remembered for teaching Catechism to Maltese children, as well as to British soldiers and sailors. It is said that he converted around 600 of the latter.
Nazju Falzon passed away on his birthday, 1 July 1865, at the age of 52. Even during his lifetime, he was widely regarded as a holy man. As a result, the Church encountered little difficulty in gathering evidence of his sanctity, supported by numerous witnesses. Over the years, many graces have been attributed to his intercession. Pope John Paul II declared him Venerable in 1987 and Beatified him in 2001.
Only one miracle attributed to him is now required for Blessed Nazju Falzon to be declared a saint.
