Visitors to a New Westminster art gallery are sure to be impressed by the colourful art of young artists.
Impressed — A Printmaking Art Show by Young Artists — features original works created by children aged three to five years of age who attend Queen’s Park Parent Participation Preschool. Featuring a range of printmaking and mixed-media pieces, the exhibition celebrates the creativity, curiosity and imagination of the preschool’s young artists.
“Children are natural artists,” Donna Ross, manager and lead teacher, said in a press release. “When they experiment with printmaking, they discover that their ideas can leave a mark on the world — literally. Impressed celebrates that sense of wonder and creative confidence.”
The exhibition runs in the Gallery in the Park until Sunday, April 26. The gallery, located in Centennial Lodge in New Westminster’s Queen’s Park, is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Ross said this exhibition is Queen’s Park Parent Participation Preschool’s tenth curated art show, which has become “a huge community event” and a well-attended art exhibit in the gallery .
Community members, families and art lovers are invited to drop by the gallery to experience the creativity and imagination of New Westminster’s youngest artists and see the world through their eyes. Works in a variety of mediums are featured in the exhibition, including watercolour, cyanotype, monoprinting, stamp printing and mixed media.
The exhibit highlights how even the youngest children can experiment boldly with artistic techniques and materials when given the freedom to explore, said the release.
“Each piece captures the unique perspective of its young creator while reflecting the playful spirit that defines the preschool’s learning philosophy,” said the release. “Throughout the project, children experimented with texture, light, pattern and colour through hands-on exploration. From the magic of sunlight creating cyanotype images to the surprise of pulling a monoprint from an inked surface, the process emphasized discovery as much as the finished artwork.”
For more than 60 years, Queen’s Park Parent Participation Preschool, a play-based preschool in New Westminster, has striven to foster creativity, curiosity and connection through collaborative learning between educators, children and families.
