Finding just one mascara that can perfectly lift, separate and elongate each lash is a challenge that most women know all too well.
As someone with rather straight and short eyelashes to begin with, I basically make it my mission to always reach for a tubing mascara that can effortlessly create the falsies effect without my needing to fumble around with glue or book an appointment with a lash tech to get eyelash extensions. When I came across REFY’s Lash Sculpt Lengthen and Lift Mascara, I was immediately intrigued.
What first stood out to me was the product’s unique, rounded applicator, which, in my opinion, more closely resembles a strip lash applicator than a mascara wand. The brand claims that the applicator’s curved, comb-like design is meant to easily target each lash in order to separate and lengthen them. It also boasts the ability to create an “all day hold” thanks to its formulation with waxes — also present in REFY’s viral Brow Sculpt product.
So, I put it to the test. Over the course of four days I used the product as my go-to mascara. Here’s how it went.
How do you use REFY Lash Sculpt Lengthen and Lift Mascara?
The mascara comes with a bit of a learning curve. You may be thinking “how difficult can swiping a wand across your lashes really be?” but let me warn you, it is harder than it looks.
Because the curve of the applicator is longer than my eye and doesn’t exactly line up with my lashes perfectly, I found that it was most effective for me to apply the mascara in sections. The tip of the applicator is pointed with smaller bristles, which the brand says is best used for the shorter lashes near the inner corner of your eye. The rest of the curved applicator has bristles that slowly graduate in length, with the longest made to target your outer lashes, according to REFY.
With my almond-shaped eyes being smaller than the applicator, it was easier to first apply the mascara to my inner corners with the tip of the applicator, then focus the other end of the applicator on my middle and outer lashes instead of trying to coat all of my lashes in one swoop motion, as I do with other mascaras I own.
My honest thoughts
The more familiar with the mascara wand I became, the better my final results were. The first few applications were trial and error — mostly resulting in me getting splotches of mascara on my eyelid and only managing to partially coat my lashes. But after learning to apply the mascara in sections, as opposed to across my entire lash line at once, I did notice that my usually straight and short lashes appeared lengthened and slightly lifted.
I loved that even if I applied multiple coats of mascara, my lashes didn’t clump or feel heavy and weighed down with product. I will say overall that the results are very natural, sort of a “my lashes, but better” look. This is the kind of mascara I would gravitate to for a no-makeup makeup day, but if I am going for a more glam look, I would opt for another mascara to give me a bolder eye.
Is it worth it?
I think this mascara is very innovative, but has a very specific target audience. In my opinion, anyone who has very straight lashes and wants a more glam look would probably view this product as one that leaves much to be desired. But I think it’s perfect to accomplish a more natural look. Even if you layer the product on multiple times, you won’t end up with spidery clumped lashes.
This mascara definitely delivers on elongating the lashes without packing on product, but I would’ve preferred to see a bit more lift. It also lasted all day long and was a breeze to remove. At $26, it is about average price for a high-end mascara. However, drugstore brands offer mascaras at much lower prices that are also effective for elongating lashes.
