For almost a year, we’ve watched subtle teasers from Hailey Bieber using a mysterious tube of lip liner for her lip combos on her Instagram and TikTok. She was clearly testing samples of a yet-to-be-released Rhode lip liner formula. The wait is over: the Rhode Peptide Lip Shape pencils are available to shop now.
It wouldn’t be a Rhode product if the formula didn’t have an out-of-the-box and disruptive approach, like the brand’s innovative melting cream blushes or the Glazing Milk that pioneered the creamy toner category, and the new Peptide Lip Shape liners are no different.
While most lip liners focus on adding color instead of dimension, Rhode’s new Lip Shapes, which come in 11 neutral-forward shades, are designed to contour and sculpt the lip to create a fuller-looking pout. Taking the innovation further, Rhode created a dual-ended liner, boasting a silicone smudger on one side. The pointed silicone smudger can diffuse the color and blend out harsh edges or erase any pigment if you color too far outside of your desired lines.
Rhode became known for its cult-favorite Peptide Lip Treatments, which first launched in three clear scents and then expanded into tinted shades, and peptides continue to be a large part of the Rhode story with the ingredient featured in the Lip Shapes. Infused with peptides and fenugreek extract (the latter boosts lip volume), the formula is designed to enhance the natural contours of your lip and boost hydration. Alongside the new lip launch, Bieber enlisted singer Tate McRae and models Yoon Bae, Anyier Anei, and Mahi Kabra to create a workout-inspired campaign to highlight the sculpting ability of the liners.
The tan packaging mimics the first makeup launch, the Pocket Blushes. “I love it when everything looks uniform. Since we’re just getting into color, I liked the idea of flesh tones, which is out of the box yet still in the same world as the Rhode gray,” Bieber previously told Bazaar. “I also felt as though the tan-nude shade looked pretty when you pop off the cap and see the blush color. It took us a second to nail this color identity for this new [category], but against the gray lip tints and the eggshell cleanser packaging, it all looks as though it’s from the same family.”
I couldn’t wait to get my hands on these buzzy new liners, and I can confirm that they live up to the hype. The liner glides onto the lips and imparts a soft-focus color that adds a subtle blurring effect but is easily blendable, making it foolproof to apply. I love the smudger, which makes it easy to avoid harsh lines. Also, the color range is unique as there are a lot of natural, nude shades, so it’s super wearable for day or night.
The Rhode Peptide Lip Shapes are available to shop and retail for $24. Bieber recently posted a TikTok showing off the new liners, and what seemed to be an unreleased Rhode bronzer and new shades of the Pocket Blush, so stay tuned as we report on more Rhode Skin news.
